Welcome to the official website of the Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Sir Charles Antrobus, Knight Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, 4th Governor-General of St. Vincent and the Grenadines was born on the 14th May 1933, at Old Montrose. He was a devoted Servant of the Vincentian people, and worked faithfully and steadfastly in his characteristic unobtrusive manner, in promoting their general well being.

Sir Charles was an early entrant in the unfolding world of the Telecommunications industry. In this regard, he touched the lives of many in his native St. Vincent and the Grenadines, elsewhere in the Caribbean and beyond. Many can attest to his contribution to their development.

PROFESSIONAL CAREER

Sir Charles spent most of his working life with the firm Cable and Wireless working his way from the bottom to the top. He excelled in the Company’s training in England and the Caribbean both in technology and management, and retired as the Manager of Cable and Wireless, Kingstown. He served in St. Lucia, The British Virgin Islands, Montserrat, Dominica and St. Kitts, at critical times as the ownership, structural and technological changes were occurring.

Those who worked with him at Cable and Wireless remember his leadership. Members of the public appreciated the style of his caring responses. In 1972, he was the first person to be nominated to Her Majesty for the award of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) when Sir James Mitchell became Premier. Sir Charles’ life exemplified the best of public service in our country long before he became Governor-General.

YEOMAN SERVICE

Sir Charles was a past Master of the St. George’s Masonic Lodge, President of the Rotary, Vice-President of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Vice-President of the Employer’s Federation and Vice-President of the Co-Operative Bank.

After Sir James Mitchell's New Democratic Party (NDP) formed government in 1984, the Government was delighted to appoint Sir Charles to several Boards in Government, where his experience, integrity and reliability were needed. He was appointed to the Income Tax Appeals Board, Chairman of the Air Transport Licensing Authority, Director of National Insurance Scheme, and member of the Central Supplies Board.

TO THE RESCUE

Sir Charles came to the rescue when the country needed a person of fine quality to fill the office of Governor-General. Following the death of Sir David Jack, Sir Charles Antrobus was appointed Governor-General in 1996, and served until his death on Monday, 3rd March 2002 in Canada where he was receiving medical treatment.

Sir Charles was the only Governor-General to have worked with three Prime Ministers, The Honourable  Sir James Mitchell, The Honourable Arnhim Eustace and Dr. The Honourable Ralph Gonsalves.
