The Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has reaffirmed its commitment to improving housing conditions nationwide by accelerating a housing rehabilitation and reconstruction program to provide safe, dignified, and resilient homes for citizens in need.

During a site visit in North Leeward, Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Sustainable Development and Area Representative for North Leeward, Hon. Dr. Kishore Shallow, highlighted the significant progress being made under the initiative. He noted that since the Government assumed office in December, one of its key priorities has been to assess and address the housing challenges affecting communities throughout Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Minister Shallow commended Minister of Housing, Hon. Andrew John, and the Ministry’s technical team for their dedication and leadership in advancing the programme despite financial constraints.

“North Leeward has been given priority attention, and we are already seeing tangible results,” Dr. Shallow said. “One of the homes we visited today was completely rebuilt after a severely deteriorated structure was demolished. Within approximately six weeks, the new home is nearing completion, with final works expected shortly. A similar project is underway in Spring Village, where another family will soon benefit from a brand-new home.”

In addition to these new homes, approximately twelve existing houses are currently undergoing extensive repairs within the constituency, while assessments have identified more than two hundred (200) additional homes requiring varying levels of rehabilitation or reconstruction.

Minister Shallow acknowledged that while the demand for housing assistance remains significant across the country, including the Grenadines, implementation must be carried out in phases due to financial limitations and operational challenges inherited by the Government. Nevertheless, he expressed confidence that the Ministry’s strategic approach is delivering meaningful progress.
