Minister of Fisheries, Marine and Land Conservation and Climate Resilience, Hon. Conroy Huggins, is urging Vincentians to protect the country’s marine resources, reminding citizens that while the ocean has sustained generations, safeguarding it remains a shared responsibility: “… we must also shoulder the responsibility of protecting it for future generations.”
Minister Huggins was speaking on Monday, May 25th, 2026, during Fisherman’s Day activities, which were held outside the Kingstown Fish Market (Little Tokyo). He noted that protecting the ocean is a shared responsibility as Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) celebrated the 49th anniversary of Fisherman’s Day.
“Let us recommit ourselves to building stronger fisheries, stronger coastal communities, stronger marine ecosystems, and a stronger Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Let us continue to uphold this year’s theme, ‘Right to Food for a Better Life and a better future,’ and let us continue to live out the slogan ‘Healthy Fish, Tasty Dish,’” Minister Huggins emphasized.
“Fisheries are about food, fisheries are about livelihoods, fisheries are about resilience, fisheries are about culture. Fisheries are about people. Fisheries are about the future. May God bless our fishers. May God bless our coastal communities,” the minister told listeners on Monday.
He noted that many people are looking forward to the 50th anniversary of Fisherman’s Day, which will be held “in an improved Little Tokyo for 2027”.
