Vedent Shetty of Calliaqua Anglican School captured first place in the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Innovation, Digital Transformation and Information’s annual Grade 5 Mathematics Quiz, held in partnership with Hachette Learning.

Shetty secured the top position with 119 points. Luke Williams of Kingstown Preparatory School placed second with 106 points, while Leo Latchman of Sion Hill Government School finished third with 95 points.

Delivering remarks at the opening ceremony, Senior Education Officer with responsibility for Curriculum, Aldia Gumbs-Dyer, highlighted the value of mathematics in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. She encouraged participants to continue striving for excellence in their academic pursuits.

Senior Education Consultant for Hachette Learning, Byron Wilson, also addressed the gathering, commending teachers, parents, and school staff for their dedication and support in preparing students for the competition.

The event also featured remarks from 2025 Mathematics Quiz champion, Draádon Ackie, who described winning the title as one of the most rewarding experiences of his school life. He encouraged participants to remain confident and give their best effort throughout the competition.

Held at the University of the West Indies Global Campus, the competition marked a notable milestone as all eleven finalists were male students, the first time this has occurred in the event’s history.
