Fourteen schools from across Saint Vincent and the Grenadines participated in the National Reading Aloud Competition held at Frenches House on Thursday, May 28th, 2026, demonstrating their proficiency in French and Spanish through a series of competitive readings. The competition featured four schools reading in French and ten in Spanish, with participants completing three rounds each before judges and spectators.
Addressing the event, Senior Education Officer for Curriculum, Mrs. Aldia Gumbs-Dyer, highlighted the value of multilingualism in an increasingly interconnected world. “As citizens of a Small Island Developing State in the Caribbean, the ability to speak another language opens doors to new opportunities, new friendships, and greater understanding among people and cultures,” she said.
Gumbs-Dyer also stressed the important role parents and guardians play in students’ academic development and language learning journey. She encouraged families to continue supporting their children, noting that parental guidance and encouragement are critical to helping students grow, achieve their goals, and reach their full potential.
The competition formed part of ongoing efforts to promote foreign language learning and cultural awareness among students throughout Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
