A flag-raising ceremony was held on Tuesday, 26th May, 2026, at the Financial Complex to commemorate the 34th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and the Republic of Cuba.
Speaking at the ceremony, H.E. Carlos Etcheverry, Ambassador of Cuba to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, noted that diplomatic relations were established in 1992 under the administration of former Prime Minister James Mitchell during a difficult economic and political period for Cuba.
The Ambassador said Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, along with several Caribbean nations, made the courageous decision to establish ties with Cuba. Since then, Cuba has provided annual scholarships to Vincentian students free of charge and has also supported national development through assistance with the construction of the Argyle International Airport (AIA) and medical brigades. H.E. Etcheverry stated that the relationship between the two countries is built on solidarity, cooperation, and genuine friendship, adding that he is proud to serve in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, Foreign Investment and Diaspora Affairs, Hon. Dwight Fitzgerald Bramble, in his address, described the relationship between Cuba and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines as a special one that has brought significant benefits to the country. Minister Bramble highlighted cooperation in sectors such as health, education, infrastructure, agriculture, culture, sports, fisheries, tourism, and energy, noting that these partnerships have positively impacted the lives of many Vincentians and continue to support national development.
Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Godwin Friday also spoke at the ceremony, describing the occasion as a celebration not only of 34 years of diplomatic relations, but also of the deep friendship between the people of both nations. Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Godwin Friday said the relationship has grown beyond diplomacy into one rooted in strong personal and cultural ties. He reaffirmed Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’ commitment to maintaining and strengthening its partnership with Cuba in the years ahead.
