The St. Vincent Girls’ High School (GHS) hosted its annual Gillis Francis Mathematics Competition on Wednesday, 6th May 2026, at the Kingstown Baptist Church (KBC). The event was organised by the Mathematics Department as part of the school’s 115th anniversary celebrations.
Head of the mathematics department, Ashana Jack, emphasised the importance of the competition in fostering critical thinking, collaboration, and confidence among students. Jack noted that the competition is “much more than numbers on a page,” highlighting its role in developing problem-solving skills that extend beyond the classroom.
“As we reflect on our theme, ‘Honouring our Legacy, Shaping our Future’, we recognise that participating in this competition keeps that legacy alive,” Senior Education Officer (SEO) Elspeth Adams stated. Adams explained that, “Mathematics is not merely about finding answers, but about the discipline of thought, logical reasoning, and persistence.”
The Senior Education Officer described the late educator Gillis Francis as a dedicated teacher, a champion of excellence, and a strong advocate for honesty and independent effort among students.
Principal of the St. Vincent Girls’ High School, LaToya Deroche-John, highlighted the lasting impact Gillis Francis had on students and colleagues, particularly his emphasis on integrity, hard work, and personal responsibility. Deroche-John commended the mathematics department for its continued dedication to academic excellence.
