Minister of Urban Development and Energy, Hon. Benarva Browne says that the installation of a Smart Meter system by the Saint Vincent Electricity Services (VINLEC) is about bringing greater transparency, efficiency, and convenience to over 50,000 customers.
Minister Browne noted that the landmark initiative marks a transformation of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’ energy sector.
She said the cutting-edge digital metering system is equipped with automated meter reading and advanced infrastructure technology, and the new digital meters mark a major step forward in the modernization of the country’s electrical services.
The Minister noted that the meters are more than just the introduction of a new device but a critical advancement that supports commitment to delivering reliable, affordable, and modern electrical services.
Minister Browne noted that among the key benefits of the digital meters are, faster and more accurate billing, elimination of manual meter readings, reducing inconvenience and safety risks for workers, enhanced customer control through real-time data on energy consumption and support for national energy conservation goals.
“No longer will meter reading require the manual visits. And I know for workers that's an added benefit. The hassle of the dog, I see the men walking around with the sticks all the time, and I think about that. So, this is indeed great,” Minister Browne said.
Minister Browne also noted this means an improved experience for both customers and workers and she praised VINLEC’s resilience and professionalism, particularly in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, where swift restoration of infrastructure boosted public confidence in the utility.
She said the rollout of the new digital system required careful planning, training, and dedication and thanked VINLEC’s engineers and technicians for their hard work.
“We're living in a time of change, technological change, environmental change, and even economic change and VINLEC is not only committed to keeping pace with this change, but also leading it,” Minister Browne said.
The Smart Meter Project was officially launched on August 11th, 2025, at the Methodist Church Hall, Kingstown.
