The Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment reports that an adult patient is currently being treated at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital after being diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a condition which affects the nerves of the body and can result in varying degrees of weakness; suspected to be related to Zika virus infection.

Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), Timothy Antoine, is concerned over the potential loss of depositors’ savings as a result of high bank fees and charges. Speaking on the Central Bank’s podcast, ECCB Connects, on 25th May 2016, Governor Antoine explained how that could happen.

At a recent press conference on Tuesday 21st June, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Rural Transformation, Hon. Saboto Caesar, disclosed that the Banana Services Unit (BSU), is continuing efforts to reduce the Black Sigatoka disease to Cronshaw levels to a minimum of one or two.

Projects under the Banana Accompanying Measures (BAM), program will soon commence with the disbursement of EC$18 million.

“We believe fundamentally that the issues of energy efficiency affect us all.  This is not something that only affects policymakers.”  These were the statements of Executive Director of Caribbean Policy Development Centre (CPDC), Mrs. Shantal Munroe-Knight, who spoke at the opening of the CPDC and the Caribbean Consultative Working Group (CCWG)’s national policy dialogue on energy efficiency, energy conservation and sustainable energy.

The first formal regional conversation centered around Marijuana in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), got started in St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Wednesday 15th June. The Town Hall meeting, which took place at the Methodist Church Hall in Kingstown was a collaboration between the Regional Commission on Marijuana and the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Board of Commission of the National Commission on Crime Prevention (NCCP), was, on Friday 17th June introduced to its chairperson. Ms. La Teisha Sandy, Deputy Director of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), was introduced as the new chairperson of the NCCP by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, Mr. Godfred Pompey.

The Director of the Environmental Management Department, Ms. Janeel Miller-Findlay, has welcomed the launch of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines component of the Japan Caribbean Climate Change Partnership Project. The project is being carried out by the United Nations Development Program, through its sub-regional office for Barbados and the OECS.

The Government of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines (GOSVG), has received financing from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), in an amount equivalent to US$12.647 million towards the cost of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Development Project to support the continued transformation and responsiveness of the TVET system as a vehicle for workforce development, consistent with St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ (SVG), human resource development needs, and intends to apply a portion of the proceeds of this financing to eligible payments under contracts procured under this project.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment advises that there are twenty (20) new laboratory confirmed cases of the Zika virus infection from samples collected between 23rd May and 6th June, here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Included in these cases is one pregnant woman.

A media event to launch the local arm of the Japan-Caribbean Climate Change Partnership Project takes placed here this Wednesday 15th June from 9:00 a.m. at Murray Heights Hotel. The main address will come from Minister of Economic Planning, Sustainable Development, Industry, Information and Labour, Hon. Camillo Gonsalves.
