The Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority (ECTEL) in collaboration with the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (NTRC) hosted a ceremony on Monday,  25th January to launch the Internet Exchange Point (IXP). This initiative is under the World Bank funded Caribbean Regional Communications Infrastructure Program (CARCIP). The Internet Exchange Point is an internationally recognised mechanism for achieving cost and service gains and ICT sector growth.

Among the national benefits to be gained from the introduction of an IXP includes provision of privacy control by keeping local traffic local, sensitive data not being subject to inspection by other governments and co-ordination of security, infrastructure protection, and abuse response activities. It also facilitates growth and development of the stakeholders community, which can engage in other activities promoting local interests.

The launching ceremony took place at the National Insurance Services (NIS) Training Room from 9:00 a.m.
