Sir Sydney Gun-Munro G.C.M.G., F.R.C.S. was born in Grenada on 29th November 1916 the 8th of 10 children of Barclay & Marie Gun-Munro. His father died when he was 7 years of age.

He attended the Anglican Primary School in Grenada and gained a scholarship to the Grenada Boys' Secondary School. In 1936 he won the Grenada Island Scholarship.

He Studied medicine at Kings College, London from 1937 and later at Kings College Hospital, London, graduating in December 1942 -MRCS - LRCP and in 1943 gained the M.B.B.S with honors and distinction in surgery.

He served on the staff of Lewisham Hospital, London October 1943 - April 1946, when he returned to Grenada. Whilst in the U.K., he was at his brother's house when it was struck by a bomb and was buried in the debris. When he was recovered four hours later he was pronounced dead, but was eventually revived.

He served as a District Medical officer in Grenada until 1949 when he was appointed surgeon at the Colonial Hospital, Kingstown, St. Vincent and served in this capacity until 1971. In 1951 he returned to the U.K. for one year to study for the Diploma in ophthalmology. In 1963 a second surgeon was appointed. From 1972 -1976 he was employed as a District Medical Officer.

In 1977 Sir Sydney was appointed Governor of St.Vincent, then an associated state and in 1979 was appointed Governor General of the State of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. He retired from this post in 1985 and gave voluntary service in Bequia until May 1997 when he was injured when a part of the verandah on which he was sitting collapsed and he fell causing severe damage to his spine. As a result he has been bed-ridden since that date.

In 1985 he was elected F.R.C.S

Sir Sydney died 1st March, 2007
