The Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Nine Mornings committee held its annual prize-giving ceremony at the Peace Memorial Hall on Saturday 6th January bringing the curtains down on the 2017 Nine Mornings Festival.

Deputy Chairman of the Nine Mornings Committee, Mr. Lennox Bowman, noted that during the Nine Mornings Festival, “the creativity within the art form was very enjoyable,” and thanked all those who worked hard to make it possible. Bowman said, “Nine mornings remains the place where Vincentian culture of all forms are on display.” The Deputy Chairman commended the communities for the improvements, and pointed out that Christmas shows must reflect elements of Christmas.

Minister of Tourism, Sports and Culture, Hon. Cecil McKie, said that “the turnout is a reflection of the hunger to continue the Nine Mornings event.” The Minister thanked all communities involved and reminded those in attendance of the importance of Nine Mornings. He explained that it builds community spirit, exposes talent, and stimulates economic activity, among other benefits.

The Nine Morning’s Festival is in the top ten of the world’s best festivals and the Tourism Minister challenged Vincentians to aim at a spot in the top five.

Representative of the major sponsors of the festival were also present. Product Development Officer of the National Lotteries Authority, Anthony Dennie, applauded the gathering for the large turnout. Dennie said that 2017 was a turning point with the opening of the Argyle International Airport. He further added that the Nine Mornings Festival is a product that must be maximised.

Communications Officer of the Saint Vincent Electricity Service, Vinlec, Ms. Tamara Job-Sprott, said that the organisation is happy to be investing in this unique Vincentian tradition, especially in the aspect of culture. Job-Sprott also congratulated all communities, home-owners and others who participated; offering commendations to the high level of community spirit that was exhibited.
