ROYAL ST. VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES POLICE FORCE

Prime minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has commended the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force and the leadership on the very good job they have been doing in limiting the space for criminals and combating crimes. The Prime Minister was speaking this morning (Jan 8th) at Cabinet room where he was hosting a discussion with Commissioner of Police (Ag) Bertie Pompey, Senior Police Officers, Permanent Secretary – Ministry of National Security Godfrey Pompey, Consultant to the PM Sir Vincent Beache and Advisor William Harry.

One of the aims of the discussion is to look at a number of security issues and matters pertaining to the Police Force and its ongoing process of reform. They will also look at the restructuring of the Police Force, legislative framework of the Police Act, Traffic and Immigration Act, establishment of a Forensic lab this year and security arrangements for World Cup Cricket 2007 among others.

The Prime Minister noted the government has been spending a lot of money on improving the facilities of the police stations and acquiring more vehicles. He said they have to equip the police with more modern tools of the trade, science and technology.

Commissioner of Police (Ag) Bertie Pompey said hemorrhaging of the Police Force is a critical problem. He noted that they have to find ways to attract persons to join the Force and to retain them in the Force. Commissioner Pompey cited examples of alternative opportunities available elsewhere that are drawing the attention of the local police officers. These include the cruise ship industry, regional police forces and the U.K armed forces.

According to Commissioner Pompey they have to look at ways to solve these problems and noted that on Jan 18th -19th they will hold a retreat to look at these issues.
