PESTICIDE STORES AND INSECTARY BUILDING OPENS

The new Pesticide Stores and Insectary Building for the Plant Protection and Quarantine Unit in the Ministry of Agriculture was officially opened yesterday at Campden Park.

Speaking at the ceremony Chief Agricultural Officer, Philmore Isaacs said that the resources for the project were made available by the Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines and the shareholders of the Agricultural Input Warehouse along with many other investors.

Area representative Dr Douglas Slater said that the facility is a result of the continuation of the Government's response to the needs of the citizens of this country. Dr Slater said that the facility will play a role in providing the services that will enhance food security in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Feature Speaker of the ceremony, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Hon Montgomery Daniel said that his is one of the most important ministries in the socio-economic and rural development of St Vincent and the Grenadines contributing over 9% to the 2005 Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Minister Daniel said that the new facility will allow for an improved environment for officers and support staff to better offer quality service to farmers, in the area of pest and disease diagnosis and treatment, soil analysis and the strengthening of the national biological support programs.

The minister stated that the Plant Protection Unit plays a critical role in the sustainability and survival of the agricultural sector in St Vincent and the Grenadines. He said that the Government's investments in the headquarters and in capacity building in the staff in the unit are deliberate strategies to reposition the agriculture sector to take its rightful place in the regional and international arena.

The building was constructed at a cost of five hundred and seventy two thousand Eastern Caribbean dollars. It includes a mini specialized library, general stores, a pest risk analysis office, one soil laboratory, a plant pathology laboratory, an entomology laboratory, insectary units, five mini laboratories and technical aides offices.
