4th Annual Junior Calypso Symposium
The 4th Annual Junior Calypso Symposium to train young Artistes in the various disciplines of the Art form was held at the Red Cross Headquarters earlier today.
Some of the topics covered were Vocal Techniques and Exercises, Stage Craft, Calypso Composition, the Music Business and Group Presentations.
Speaking at the Symposium, Minister of Urban Development, Culture, Labor and Electoral Matters, Hon Rene Baptiste, said Calypso is part of our heritage which should be fully embraced.
She however noted that there is a concern about the mimicking of Adult Vulgarity by Junior Soca Artistes and the Ministry of culture will not tolerate such behavior from the junior participants.
The Minister also said that the Ministry would be using the services of the Cadet Corp to assist in the stage management as these individuals are disciplined and have the frame of mind to perform the task.
Minister Baptiste said it is time to start training some young people to take the place of those who would eventually exit the scene. She said there will be training sessions for Stage Managers and Masters of Ceremony.
He said too often in the past, Symposiums that were organized in May and June didn't achieve positive results during that short time as the implementation period was too close to the Carnival Festivals.
The Symposium was organized by the National Cultural Foundation in collaboration with the Carnival Development Corporation, the SVG Calypsonians' Association and the Ministry of Education.
