JU-C MATHEMATICS COMPETITION

The prize giving ceremony for the Ju-C Mathematics Competition was held yesterday, 16th January, 2007 at the Anglican Pastoral Center.

The competition was organized by the Math Department in the Curriculum Development Unit of the Ministry of Education in order to develop a deeper appreciation and love for mathematics among students.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Chief Education Officer Luis Deshong urged teachers to find ways to use the projects that were displayed as ways to enhance their math lessons at school.

The students' projects were judged at three levels, internally at each participating school, at a zonal level and at the finals.

The prizes awarded in the finals were: " 1st, Taj Lee of St Vincent Grammar School for his project "Matherdy" " 2nd, Khodi King of St Joseph Convent, Kingstown for "Shake and Make" " 3rd, Oral Jacobs of J. P. Eustace Secondary School for "Maths to Graphics" " 4th, to Chezaul Walker also of the St Vincent Grammar School for "Journey to Maths". A special prize for most outstanding school went to the St Vincent Grammar School while the prize to the most outstanding student was awarded to Taj Lee of that School.

Special mention was made of the Multi-Purpose Center of Campden Park whose students used their wood work skills to create a math game.

All students who participated in the finals were given a copy of the Oxford Primary Maths Dictionary.
