MINISTRY OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT MOVING AHEAD WITH PLANS

Plans for re-developing capital Kingstown are moving ahead as anticipated. This is according to Minister of Urban Development, Rene Baptiste. Ms. Baptiste told the Agency for Public Information that a significant amount of work had been done on the Middle Street area.

Middle Street is one of the main shopping areas in Kingstown but has recently seen a heavy increase of street vendors.

Minister Baptiste said the Kingstown Board had had internal meetings with the vendors and based on the reports she had received, the Urban Development Task Force appears to be making "good progress." She said the plan is to have uniformity with the vending stalls and to gradually reduce the amount of vehicular traffic passing through the area. She said it has been drawn to the attention of the Ministry that some vendors were vending in more than one area. "We can do that when it's a very large city but we have to find areas of compromise," she stated. She also announced that during the month of March, Heritage Square would be converted into a 'welcoming visitors' mall' where visitors to this country for World Cup Cricket (WCC) can get a birds eye view of the heritage of St.Vincent and the Grenadines.

This village is scheduled to be opened on March 2 at 5 in the evening. Ms. Baptiste said a rum festival would be hosted during this period. She also appealed to Vincentians who produce local items, drinks and food on a small scale to take advantage of the opportunity to showcase their products at the 'Heritage Village.'

The Minister pointed out that the no bottle policy would be observed at the village along with the non tolerance of amplified music during business hours at the village. She is requesting the assistance of business owners around Kingstown in keeping the town clean. Another area of concern to the Minister is the traffic situation in Kingstown. Minister Baptiste said this would come under scrutiny for WCC. She disclosed that the traffic study was in and no further wide spread public consultation would be held on the matter. She said her Ministry would be discussing with the Police Force the possibility of segregating the traffic. "The role of urban development is to desegregate and put things into order." Ms. Baptiste said soon the time and days for deliveries around Kingstown would be dealt with. "Don't say it can't be happen in St.Vincent, we can't ask the world to stop because we are St.Vincent," she claimed. She also stated that tickets for littering would be coming soon. The framework, she noted, is there and the litter situation is being monitored. "We are seeing people falling into line," she said.
