SVG and ROC Strengthen Ties
Taiwaneese President Chen Shui-bian makes historic visit to St. Vincent & The Grenadines


At the invitation of Prime Minister Dr. Ralph E. Gonsalves, His Excellency Chen Shui-bian, President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), visited St. Vincent and the Grenadines from the 28th to the 29th of September 2005.

President Chen was accompanied by a high ranking delegation that included Dr. Tan Sun Chen, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the other cabinet members.

During his stay in St Vincent and the Grenadines, President Chen met with Governor General His Excellency Sir Frederick Ballantyne and Prime Minister the Honourable Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, and exchanged views on the current world situation and matters of mutual concern. President Chen and Prime Minister Gonsalves agreed that all nations should settle international disputes based upon the principles of sovereign equality through peaceful dialogue and reiterated their desire and determination to cooperate closely for the promotion of peace and prosperity in the Caribbean region, the Asia-Pacific region and throughout the world.

President Chen complimented the Prime Minister Gonsalves on his wisdom, foresight, and this extraordinary leadership in promoting the welfare of the Vincentian people. President Chen also expressed his profound appreciation to the people and government of St Vincent and the Grenadines for the steadfast and long-standing support for the Republic of China's (Taiwan) participation in the world community and international organization, particularly the United Nation and the World Health Organization. President Chen further reiterated the Republic of China's (Taiwan) commitment to continue assisting St. Vincent and the Grenadines in strengthening its national development process and prosperity.

Prime Minister Gonsalves reiterated the support of St. Vincent and the Grenadines for the Republic of China's (Taiwan) effort to join the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and other international organizations. He also pledged continued support for the right of the 23 million people of Taiwan to peace, democracy and prosperity. Prime Minster Gonsalves agreed that cross-Strait issues must be settled by peaceful means, and accordingly disagreed with the use of force by the People's Republic of China to settle cross-Strait issues. St. Vincent and the Grenadines admired the Republic of China (Taiwan) for her long-term and reasonably appeal for a peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues. Prime Minister Gonsalves expressed full confidence in the people of Taiwan to chart their destiny in their own interests. In this regard, Prime Minister Gonsalves praised President Chen's remarkable leadership and outstanding qualities as a fighter for peace and democracy.

The two leaders expressed satisfaction over the cordial friendship and close cooperation that exist between the two countries. Prime Minister Gonsalves, on behalf of the government and people of St Vincent and the Grenadines expressed his appreciation for Taiwan's significant contributions to the national development and prosperity of St Vincent and the Grenadines through a wide range of cooperation projects. Prime Minister Gonsalves is also grateful to the Republic of China (Taiwan) for providing scholarships to Vincentian and dispatching Taiwan ICDF volunteers to St Vincent and the Grenadines.

President Chen expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Gonsalves for the hospitality and warm reception that the government and people of St Vincent and the Grenadines accorded him and his delegation.
