BURNING OF COCAINE
Approximately EC$363,000,000 literally went up in smoke today as 605 kilos of cocaine was burnt at the Rabacca Dry River by law enforcement officers attached to the Narcotics Unit.
According to head of the operation ASP Michael Charles; the drugs were confiscated over a period of 7 years, through stop and search missions, airports searches, tips and joint patrols by the SSU, RRU and the Coastguard.
Charles said that when it came to the traffickers' ingenuity; "no stones were left unturned" as drugs were found in sealed cans sporting 'orange juice, burger and pedigree dog food' labels while some was found even in suitcases handle frames.
He also reported that these items were discovered by the vigilance of the Narcotics squad as some of the items were outward bound. He however disclosed that larger quantities which are confiscated from time to time are merely transshipped here mainly from the South American continent.
When asked about his feeling pertaining to the burning of the drugs, ASP Charles said it was "a weight off the shoulder" of the Commissioner of Police and members of the Drug Squad; as more officers can now be otherwise utilized instead of guarding the drugs on a 24/7 basis.
Commissioner of Police (Ag) Bertie Pompey also sees the operation as a victory for law enforcement and the entire nation. He said that cocaine is dangerous to health and it is better for it to be consumed by fire than human.
He further stated that he knows that the burning of that quantity of cocaine will hurt the pockets of the traffickers but that it is far better to destroy dollars than lives.
Pompey indicated that at a later date a quantity of marijuana will also be destroyed.
The destruction of the cocaine was witnessed by members of the senior rank of the constabulary, members of the Clergy, a representative of the Bar Association and members of the Media.
